How To Keep Your Tile Looking Great

Tile is known for its water resistance and easy cleaning, but it does require some upkeep. With the right maintenance routine your tile will look great and last for years.

Start by Sealing the grout

Grout is applied to tiles to lock them tight, keep out water, and provide a finished look. But grout is porous and prone to getting dirty. If you want to keep your project looking its best, seal the grout after it has been installed. There are various easy-to-apply sealers available at your local hardware or home store.

Keep it Clean

1 Sweep or vacuum to remove any dust or debris.

2 Clean tile with a mild detergent and clean water.  Diluted dishwashing soap can do the job without having to worry about damaging the tile or stripping the sealer from your grout.

Use a rag or chamois-type mop rather than a sponge mop.  Sponge mops tend to push dirty water into the grout lines, making them harder to clean. Be sure to change the water frequently while mopping; dirty water equals a cloudy floor.

Avoid:

Any cleaners containing acid or bleach shouldn’t be used for routine maintenance.

Wax-based cleaners and oil-based detergents, and use sealants on grout joints only.

Harsh cleaning aids like steel wool pads or any scouring pads containing metal.

3 Dry tiles with a clean, lint-free cloth immediately after washing.  Don't let your glazed tile floors air-dry as the sitting water will form water spots.

What About Stubborn Stains?

If your grout needs cleaning, often a good going-over with a stiff-bristled nylon brush and hot water will do the job, but for heavier dirt and mild stains turn to vinegar. Fill a spray bottle with a half-and-half solution of vinegar and warm water. Spray on the grout, let it stand for five minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush.

Tougher jobs call for a vinegar/baking soda paste.  Make a paste using baking soda and water, spritz lightly with vinegar, and immediately scrub and rinse the area. Once grout is clean, a regular spray-down with vinegar-and-water solution will help to prevent new stains from setting in.
